City Administration
The city offices are located at 404 Grand Avenue and are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The city office is closed on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. City council meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Senior Citizen Center, 411 Grand Avenue. The City of Burwell is represented by a mayor and four council members. Serving under the governing officials are employees, boards and commissioners.

Police
The Burwell Police Department is located at 404 Grand Avenue. The police department is staffed with two police officers. Region 26 serves as the dispatch office for the police department. The officers can be reached 24 hours a day by calling 308.942.3435 or in the case of an emergency, dial 911. For more information, contact Chief of Police Monte Kearns at 308.346.5301.

Burwell Economic Development
The economic development board of directors consists of six members appointed by the mayor with the approval of the city council. The economic development director is recommended by the economic development board of directors for hire and appointed by the mayor with the approval of the city council. The primary responsibility of the director is the implementation of the Burwell Economic Development Plan, as approved by the voters in September 2003. During the economic development boards first year of operation they have been instrumental in completing the Garfield County Labor Survey, compiling the communities economic and demographic information, completing 31 Business Retention & Expansion Program Visits and creating the Burwell Revolving Loan Fund.

Planning Commission
Burwell has a seven-member planning commission. Members are appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council for a six-year term.

Park Board
Burwell has a three-member park board. Members are appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council. In the past few years the park board has been instrumental in helping the city acquire new playground equipment. The Burwell City Park includes a Kiddie Koral, picnic area, baseball field, a seasonal swimming pool and tennis courts.

Streets
Approximately 75 percent of the streets in Burwell are paved. In 2004, the city completed a downtown street improvement project, which included the repaving of all streets, sidewalks and curbs in the downtown business district. The city is responsible for street maintenance, which includes street sweeping, snow removal, patching, overlay, crack filling, sanding, parking stall and cross walk painting, street lighting and repair of concrete streets.

Cemetery
The Burwell City Cemetery is located southwest of Burwell along Highway 91. Cemetery records can be obtained at the Burwell City Office, at 404 Grand Avenue or by calling 308.346.4509, or by e-mail. A copy of the directory is currently at the cemetery and the library. People interested in genealogy research can contact Jupe Anderson at 308.346.4378. Through the assistance of the Burwell Community Fund and support from past and present community members in recent years the city has put a new fence around the cemetery and is in the process of raising money for additional trees and shrubbery in the cemetery.

Burwell Housing Authority
The Burwell Housing Authority has 78 housing units designated for low-to-moderate income families, elderly and disabled people. The housing units include: 25-single family units including 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units; 53 multi-housing units are primarily designed for elderly and disabled people. The Burwell Housing Authority office is open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Volunteer Fire and Rescue
The Burwell Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has 34 volunteer fire department personnel and 12 volunteer emergency medical technicians. The department’s equipment includes two ambulances, two pumper trucks, three tankers, one rescue truck, three grass rigs and a dive rig.
